A strategy for increasing collaboration in Deep Tech product teams

Product teams have an uphill battle at the best of times when it comes to juggling the demands of stakeholders, customers, remote teams, functional silos and business as usual. And it gets both more challenging and more interesting the further one moves away from the well-worn paths of SaaS and enterprise software.

I've written a little about the challenges of product management in Deep Tech (and have a whole newsletter devoted to it in fact), but I can say quite specifically that feels like "Boss Mode" for any product manager attempting to stand up a new product function, with new products, in an emerging but still highly experimental industry. Rather than dwelling privately the topics of transparency and collaboration, I thought I might as well embrace the meta nature of the topic and share what I'm undertaking at the time of writing with my team here at Quantum Brilliance. If this is of interest to other Deep Tech product managers or leaders, I can share more ideas and experiences on this topic.

Strategies for increasing transparency and collaboration on remote product teams

To increase transparency and trust in a remote startup team, a product team can take several steps:

  1. Clear communication channels: Establish clear and open lines of communication within the team. Utilize collaboration tools like project management platforms, chat applications, and video conferencing software to ensure seamless communication.

  2. Regular team meetings: Conduct regular team meetings to align on goals, discuss progress, and address any concerns. These meetings should provide an opportunity for team members to share updates, ask questions, and provide feedback.

  3. Document and share information: Create a centralized repository for important information, such as project documentation, meeting notes, and decision-making processes. Ensure that this information is easily accessible and regularly updated so that everyone on the team can stay informed.

  4. Transparency in decision-making: Involve the team in the decision-making process whenever possible. Seek input, gather feedback, and make decisions collaboratively. Clearly communicate the rationale behind decisions to ensure everyone understands the context and feels involved.

  5. Performance tracking and metrics: Establish clear performance metrics and tracking systems to measure progress and outcomes. This allows team members to understand their contributions and provides transparency into individual and team performance.

  6. Regular progress updates: Provide regular updates on project progress, milestones achieved, and any challenges faced. Sharing this information openly demonstrates transparency and keeps the team informed about the overall direction and status of the project.

  7. Encourage feedback and ideas: Create a culture that encourages team members to provide feedback, share ideas, and ask questions. Foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their opinions and suggestions without fear of judgment or retribution.

  8. Recognition and appreciation: Recognize and appreciate the efforts and contributions of team members. Celebrate milestones, acknowledge achievements, and publicly commend individuals for their work. This fosters a positive and supportive team culture that enhances trust and morale.

  9. Virtual team-building activities: Organize virtual team-building activities to foster relationships and build trust among team members. These activities can include virtual games, social events, or informal chats to encourage team bonding and collaboration.

  10. Lead by example: The product team leaders should embody the values of transparency and trust. By demonstrating open communication, actively seeking feedback, and being transparent in their own actions, leaders can set the tone for the team and encourage others to follow suit.

By implementing these practices, a product team can create an environment of transparency, collaboration, and trust within a remote startup team, leading to better team cohesion and improved productivity.
